Bellevue Couple Honored At White House For Online Food Game

September 29, 2010

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A Bellevue couple received a top honor at the White House Wedensday as part of Michelle Obama’s push to get kids to eat better.

Marta and Frederic De Wulf were among 12 groups recognized for creating a digital tool to improve health. The De Wulfs built an online game, called "Smash Your Food."

The game, which can be played by adults, too, has players fill out some information, pick one of their favorite foods and then “smash” it. Afterward, the amount of salt, sugar and oil contained within the food is revealed and is compared to the amount of those ingredients recommended for each meal.

“When they see the sugar cubes drop into the cup after the milkshake has been smashed, that makes an impact, it’s the reality and so they see it and when children see it, they know it,” Marta De Wulf said.
