PC Magazine: Smash Your Food App for iPad Crushes Food and Teaches Kids about Non-Healthy FoodsMarch 23, 2012
Kids today are no different from when we were kids - Make it cool, and they will learn. Food N' Me, a winner of the "Apps for Healthy Kids" campaign launched by First Lady Michelle Obama, defiantly brings the cool factor to their Smash Your Food app that lets kids pick food to be smashed in a virtual machine and watch as the bad contents accumulate to get a better idea of just what they are eating.
The app in itself is a game. Kids first pick up to 40 unhealthy foods they eat too much of (sodas, candy, hamburgers, pizza, etc). Then have to guess how much sugar, salt and oil are in the foods they pick. Next comes the fun part - They put the foods in the smashing machine watch as the food are pulverized (all of the foods were actually put in a real giant piston-driven machine and smashed in High Definition). What's left are the amounts of sugar, salt, and oil - Guess right, and players get points and advance to the next level (5 levels total) where more food awaits to be smashed.
Check out the video of how the folks at Food N' Me set up the smashing machine to crush your favorite foods:
Kids get to learn and have a little fun, while parents get customized emails with information on healthy eating tips for their children matched to their age range and activity level right from the app based on how their kids interact with the app. So check out Smash Your Food for iPad in iTunesand let us know what you think.
